The change of seasons can be hard on your skin, so it’s important to give it some extra love. If your skin’s been getting drier and looking more dull lately, it’s probably time to adjust your routine. Luckily, there are some simple ways to adapt to the cooler weather and keep your skin happy. Here are 5 skincare tips for cooler weather:
Swap your moisturizers
During the hotter and more humid months, it’s all about lightweight products to keep your skin from getting too shiny and oily. But when the weather gets cooler outside, your skin gets zapped of it’s moisture more easily, and all those lightweight products will no longer do the trick. Try swapping your skincare for richer, more hydrating facial oils and body creams. Coconut-based moisturizers are great for your body, and argan or rosehip oils are great anti-aging facial moisturizers that won’t clog your pores.
Use overnight masks
Richer than a normal face mask, an overnight mask will deliver super potent and moisturizing ingredients to help with dry skin. The best part about an overnight mask is that you can easily apply it right before bed (even if you’re super tired) and not have to worry about it again until the next morning. We love cleansing balms because they can double as a facial cleanser and overnight mask. You can also try making your own overnight mask by mixing together equal parts raw honey and yogurt. Take cooler showers
This one’s an especially helpful tip since cooler temperatures and windy weather can suck the moisture right out of your skin. Hot showers can strip your skin of moisture, which can lead to itching, flaking and discomfort. It may seem counter intuitive to take a cool shower when it’s freezing outside, but taking cooler showers will actually help your skin retain more moisture. If you can’t handle taking a cold shower, try easing yourself into it by taking warm showers instead. As long as you aren’t taking hot showers, you should notice a pretty quick improvement in your skin!
Use a humidifier
Colder air usually means drier air, so try using a humidifier to get some moisture back. Increasing the humidity levels in your home (especially while you sleep) will help your skin retain more moisture. Another benefit of using a humidifier? Airborne viruses are less likely to survive in more humid environments, which means you’ll likely decrease your chance of catching the flu.
Drink more water
Staying hydrated is essential to a healthy, glowing complexion. Most of us drink a lot of water when it’s hot outside, but we tend to get dehydrated during the cooler months since we don’t feel as parched from the heat. To ensure that you’re getting enough water throughout the day, try to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces.
